I have extensive experience with 0-to-1 work and getting projects off the ground. I am pretty good at full-stack and backend development, and probably not the best fit for infra-heavy projects or projects around specialized UI interactions. Most recently I’ve worked within the typescript ecosystem, and in my past lives I’ve build production systems in Ruby and Scala. I can pick up new tech stacks easily.
I’m comfortable working either as an extra person picking up tasks from the team’s queue, or, ideally, owning a separate, well-defined project end-to-end.
I have extensive experience being a team lead & running various org-wide initiatives. I am happy to be a sounding board and/or do focused projects on interviewing & hiring, projects involving non-product teams (support, sales, finance, marketing,...), or projects that involve vendors & outside parties.
I prefer to work in-person few days of the week if possible. In-person makes everything smoother, but I’m open to work for companies that are fully remote.
My ideal work schedule for these engagements is 4 days a week, but I’m happy to go up or down based on need & availability.
Please think of me as an experienced team member entering your team. While I am highly independent and will find my way around, this engagement will be most productive if I receive sufficient onboarding support.
I strongly recommend being paired with a team member who (1) understands the product & codebase and (2) has time to answer questions. Ideally we'd start off with short 1:1s a few times a week. I recognize that this is a time commitment on your end, but I believe this to be crucial for a successful engagement.
Before we get going, I’m happy to help explore your needs and scope the project to determine if I’m the right fit. I will not charge for these initial conversations.
I spent the last ~5 years building Primer, a startup creating a network of K-8 microschools across USA. I was Primer’s hire #1, and was responsible for most of the initial engineering efforts. Two and a half years in, I got promoted to Head of Engineering, led the team through a significant pivot, and did a lot of cross-functional initiatives as part of the leadership team.
Before Primer, I was the tech lead & a staff engineer at Coinbase Commerce, where I focused on the backend & crypto stack. Before that, I contracted at Triplebyte, conducting over hundred technical interviews. I did my bachelors at MIT, and as a kid went to a bunch of math competitions.
I’ve spent my 11-year career in startups and will stay in the ecosystem. Before figuring out what I’ll commit to next, I would like to spend this year doing various personal projects and helping out startups I find interesting - this is where these engagements come in.
I want to be upfront that I am not looking for a full-time role at this time. You should probably not engage with me unless you have a particular project or need a temporary boost in your team’s output.
